Dr Ashish Kumar

Ashish Kumar works in health systems modelling at SingHealth Health Services Research Centre. He switched to a career in health systems modelling in 2021 when he joined Duke-NUS Medical School. His current work includes applications of system dynamics, agent based modelling, and network analysis to the health domain. These including long-range planning for the Future Hospital, modelling the impact of community hospitals on inpatient health service use, and macro- and micro-level simulation of the emergency care system. He is the lead instructor for an undergraduate elective (SMU-X) course on complex systems approaches in healthcare at Singapore Management University, and has a secondment appointment at the Ministry of Health Office of Healthcare Transofrmation (MOHT).
Prior to his research career, he worked for 20 years at Bell Labs Consulting and Nokia Networks. His last role was Principal Consultant, Economics and Operations. In this role he served as enegagement lead for prestigious technology strategy projects for clients in Singapore and Malaysia, and as a subject matter expert for projects in a number of countries including South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Australia. He obtained extensive experience in key account, commercial, and supply chain management before starting work in consulting.
He has a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee), master’s degree from the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (now IIM Mumbai), and PhD in management from the IIT Delhi. He is a pro bono reviewer for the Historical Novel Society and he has short stories published in ten countries. His first novel was longlisted for the Epigram Books Prize and a co-translated work was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize (translation).
