"Data hungry" researcher at Global Climate Forum

The Global Climate Forum (GCF) is looking for a researcher to work with us in a new major international research effort, the Center of Excellence for Global Systems Science (CoeGSS), funded by the European Commission. Global Systems Science (GSS) is an emerging research field focused on the risks and opportunities involved in global coordination problems, e.g. concerning financial markets, global energy use and others. Addressing typical GSS research questions, the relevant datasets are mostly very large, and may include highly heterogeneous data sources, e.g. data streams from social media. The Center of Excellence aims at making High Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Analysis usable in GSS to address complex societal and scientific problems. A key contribution of CoeGSS will be the development of an HPC-based framework to generate customized synthetic populations for GSS applications.

Tasks include: - Research relating to synthetic populations in view of green growth opportunities - Big data collection and analysis, as well as modelling, with high performance computing - Communication and dissemination activities such as the production of newsletters and the organization of workshops

The position can start from October 2015 and runs until the end of September 2018. Extension is not excluded. Skills/Qualifications: - Skills and experience in finding and processing big data - Familiarity with high performance computing - An interest in the field of climate change/green growth, ideally some background in economics - PhD or equivalent experience - Good oral and written communication skills in English - Ability to learn fast and to quickly understand new issues.
