Department of Network and Data Science

The Department of Network and Data Science (DNDS) at the Central European University carries out research on the theoretical foundations and interdisciplinary applications of network science. The Department is the largest hub and offers the only PhD in network science in Europe. The Department currently hosts 9 faculty members, 25 PhD students and several postdocs.

Topics of interest include:

  • processes on networks (epidemic spreading and social contagion, opinion and cultural dynamics, evolutionary game theory, random walk and diffusion, synchronization, control, cascades, rank dynamics)
  • mesoscopic structures (community discovery, generative models and stochastic block models, network inference)
  • temporal networks
  • multilayer networks
  • networks beyond pairwise interactions
  • physical networks
  • economic and financial networks
  • social networks
  • urban networks
  • agent-based models
  • computational social science
  • human behavior

The Department of Network and Data Science translates these ideas into research projects. Our faculty have won several major grants from the European Union and US funding agencies.
