Notice of competition for the CSS Junior Scientific Award 2020

The CSS promotes the Junior Scientific Award to recognize the excellence in the scientific career of young researchers in Complex Systems. It is awarded once a year to a maximum of two young researchers (up to ten years after PhD completion) who have achieved outstanding results in complexity science in any of the areas representative of the CSS.

1. Aim and criteria

The Junior Scientific Award is awarded to up to 2 selected researchers for their achievements in research on any of the areas representative of the CSS. Both theoretical and experimental research activities are taken into account. In particular, the award will recognize outstanding contributions relevant to the progress of complexity science.

2. Award

The Award will consist of a 1-year CSS membership, a free registration for the corresponding annual CSS Conference, an invitation to the Award Ceremony, and a Diploma.

3. Candidacies

The winner(s) will be selected by a Selection Committee appointed by the Executive Committee of the CSS. The winner(s) of the award will be selected among the candidacies received within the deadline indicated below. The rules for the submission of candidacies are as follows:

  • All applications should be sent electronically to awards.css@gmail.com  
  • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • Any young researcher, in whatever discipline of those covered by the CSS, can be nominated.
  • Young researchers are considered as so whenever the time elapsed between the PhD completion and the call for nominations is at most 10 years.
  • Each candidacy shall be submitted by at least one nominator, who sends a dossier motivating the specific candidacy.
  • The nominator should be a member of the CSS at the time of the nomination
  • A candidacy remains valid for 2 years, provided the candidate still fulfils the eligibility conditions. Nominator(s) can nevertheless update support documents if desired.

4. Candidature dossier

The nominator is required to send the following material, written in English:

  • a) a candidature statement written by the nominator, describing and motivating the candidacy of the nominee to the award (maximum 3 pages) and which is the nominee’s main area of research. Multiple nominations by the same nominator are not allowed.
  • b) Letters of support from at least 2 researchers supporting the nomination. Supporting letters to multiple candidates are discouraged.
  • c) A CV of the candidate, including the most relevant contributions.

The whole dossier should be submitted via email to awards.css@gmail.com in pdf or word format.

5. Selection of Candidatures

The Selection Committee is fully and exclusively endowed with the responsibility of assessing the eligibility of candidatures, examining and selecting the dossiers of the admitted candidates and proposing the winners to the Executive Committee of the CSS, that will then take the final decision.

6. Deadline for Candidacy Submission

The candidacy dossier related to the year 2020 and including all documents as per art. 4, has to be received by the CSS within Monday, June 15th, 2020.
