CSS Junior Scientific Awards 2016

The Complex Systems Society (CSS) promotes the Junior Scientific Award to recognize the scientific career of CSS members. It will be awarded to a maximum of two young researchers (up to seven years after PhD completion) who have achieved outstanding results in complexity science in any of the areas representative of the CSS.

  1. Aim and Criteria The Junior Scientific Award is awarded to up to 2 selected members of the Society for their achievements in research on any of the areas representative of the CSS. Both theoretical and experimental research activities are taken into account. The award will recognize outstanding contributions relevant to the progress of complexity science.

  2. Award The Award will consist of a 1-year CSS membership, a free registration for the CCS 16 Conference, an invitation to the Award Ceremony, and a Diploma.

  3. Submission of Candidacies The winner(s) will be selected by a Selection Committee. The winner(s) of the award will be selected among the candidacies received within the deadline indicated below. The rules for the submission of candidacies are as follows:

  4. All applications should be sent electronically to the address indicated in this Notice of Competition.
  5. Self-nominations are not accepted.
  6. Nominees should be members of the CSS at the moment of their nominations.
  7. Any young member of the society, in whatever discipline among those covered by the CSS, can be nominated.
  8. Young researchers are considered as so whenever the time elapsed between the PhD completion and the call for nominations is less than 7 years.
  9. Each candidacy can be submitted by at least one nominator, who will have to attach a dossier motivating the specific candidacy.

  10. Candidature Dossier The guarantor of the candidacy is required to submit the candidature dossier drawn up in English. A full application will consist of the following material: a) The nominator should send a candidature statement describing and motivating the candidacy of the nominee to the award (maximum 3 pages) and the nominee’s main area of research. Multiple nominations by the same nominator are not allowed. b) Letters of support from at least 2 researchers supporting the nomination. Supporting letters to multiple candidates are discouraged. c) A CV of the candidate, including the most relevant contributions (up to 10 selected publications). The whole dossier should be submitted via email to awards.css@gmail.com. Files related to the candidacy documents should be in pdf or word format.

  11. Selection of Candidatures The Selection Committee is fully and exclusively endowed with the responsibility of assessing the eligibility of candidatures, examining and selecting the dossiers of the admitted candidates, and choosing the winner(s). The Selection Committee will propose to the EC of the CSS a ranked list of the candidates according to their outstanding contributions. The EC of the CSS will take the final decision. The proposal of the SC will be followed, unless violations of the award rules or other issues are appreciated. The award will be based only on excellence, independently on the area of research within the scope of complex systems science. Nevertheless, when ties between candidates will arise, the EC of the CSS will promote representation of diversity of areas among the selected candidates.

  12. Deadline for Candidacy Submission The candidacy dossier related to the year 2016 and including all documents as per art. 4, has to be received by the CSS within Friday, May 20th, 2016.
