CSS Education Committee Action Plan 2009 - 2012

Jeff Johnson, the Education Committee Chair is responsible for this Action Plan. 2/11/09

The Education Committee is working towards providing free CSS-certificated complex systems education for all members of the scientific community. The major objectives are

(1) To put in place a core curriculum agreed by the CS community - things that a CS scientist should know.

mathematics     ASSYST workpackage WP6.2 First version to be published 30th Nov 2009 (Anxo Sánchez).
computation     ASSYST workpackage WP6.2 First version to be published 30th Nov 2009 (Jorge Louçã ).
physics            ASSYST workpackage WP6.3 First version to be published 30th Nov 2009 (Peter Richmond ).
social science    First version planned to be published in February 2010 (Jeff Johnson).
biology             First version planned to be published mid 2010 (volunteer required to lead this).

(2) To provide teaching resource and certification for students and researchers studying the core curriculum

ASSYST WP6.5 is working towards implementing the étoile model developed by Jeff Johnson and Paul Bourgine. This will provide free on-line assessment and certification of the core curriculum, and use a dynamic new method of creating learning resources that is hoped to deliver personalised education. A proposal is currently with FET for a full development and test of this concept.

Action date: The first ASSYST-CSS course will be delivered on-line in June 2010.

(3) To deliver a European PhD and Masters in Complex Systems Science

ASSYST WP6.1 is working towards the CSS awarding this title. The formula, still under discussion, is that a candidate for the CCS title of European PhD in Complex Systems should (i) have been awarded an approved PhD, (ii) the candidate should have undertaken approved studied or research at a European institution, and (iii) the candidate must have demonstrated mastery of the CSS core curriculum.

Action date: the first draft of the European PhD Regulations will be presented to the CSS Council in May 2010.
Action date: the first European PhD in Complex Systems will be awarded in 2011.
