  • Three post-doctoral Fellowships in Foundations of Complexity : Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Applications are invited for young, highly skilled and motivated researchers in the three following subjects: i) Study of anomalous entropic behaviors in strongly- entangled quantum systems, and their corresponding thermostatistical description. A centrally related paper is Caruso and Tsallis, Physical Review E 78, 021102 (2008). The purpose is to proceed this study focusing, among others, on which is density matrix associated, by using for instance Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) techniques. ii) Computation efforts in statistical-mechanical and thermodynamical properties of long-range-interacting classical many-body Hamiltonian systems (e.g., universality classes of nonadditivity; exhibition of the zeroth principle of thermodynamics, anomalous distributions of momenta). The focus is on using essentially molecular dynamics: see a typical example in Cirto, Assis and Tsallis, Physica A 393, 286 (2014). iii) Analytical efforts (in the style of mathematics, or of mathematical physics) along the lines of Central Limit Theorems and Large Deviation Theory, for systems with strongly correlated elements. Typical examples can be seen in Umarov, Tsallis and Steinberg, Milan J. Math. 76, 307 (2008), Umarov, Tsallis, Gell-Mann and Steinberg, J. Math. Phys. 51, 033502 (2010), and Ruiz and Tsallis, Phys. Lett. A 377, 491 (2013). The three, immediately available, Fellowships are renewable up to 33 months. The stipend is the equivalent in Brazilian Real of USD 4,545.45/month (12 payments per year; free of taxes). The working place is the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Fisicas, Rio de Janeiro, in direct relationship with Prof. Constantino Tsallis and his collaborators. Interested researchers should quickly contact C. Tsallis (tsallis@cbpf.br) and Thamires Bengaly Pereira (bengaly@cbpf.br), attaching CV and List of Publications.

  • Master 2 internship (5-6 months) in Modelling Efficiency of infectious agent transmission in animal networks

Social transmission of behavior and disease can take many forms and may deeply affect an individual’s fitness. In this project, we are interested to investigate the dynamic of infectious agent transmission in animal networks in order to determine what conditions and network properties are infectious organisms expected to spread freely or be tightly constrained. Theoretical social network will be created in order to have a set of efficiency values going from 0 (inefficient network) to 1 (most efficient network). Then, we are going to test the different networks by changing either the number of group members or their properties (such as modularity and density) to understand how disease is transmitted between individuals. Our findings will not only provide information concerning the mechanisms of social transmission within a group, but will also show how social network structures and dynamic vary depending on different factors such as group composition and size, providing further information of how animals, including humans, lead with the benefits and costs of group-living.

The abnormal mortality of honeybee colonies seen over the last 20 years could have multiple and complex causes, such as climate, pathogens, parasites or pesticides. In this project, we propose to model a honeybee colony in order to create an interactive simulation to evaluate the impact of these different factors. We will use an agent-based approach to comprehend the complexity of the colony, where several tens of thousands of honeybees interact and live together. This will enable us to improve our understanding of the biological system and to introduce disruptions into the model in order to evaluate ecological (impact of Varroa destructor or other parasites and pathogens) and anthropogenic (pesticides and beekeeping practices) phenomena. This internship aims at designing and implementing a first scalable version of the Agent-Based Model.

  • Interdisciplinary PhD in Cognitive and Network science at Aix-Marseille University

We are looking for a PhD candidate with a strong background in mathematical or physical sciences and an interest in cognitive science and animal behaviour to work on a project called “Cognitive underpinnings of social network dynamics” (COGNET) at Aix-Marseille University (France). The project is built on a collaboration between three researchers with complementary expertise, a specialist in evolutionary theory and adaptation (Nicolas Claidière), a specialist in human and non-human animal cognition (Joël Fagot) and a specialist in the theory, analysis and data-driven modelling of complex networks (Alain Barrat).

  • Climate Statistics PhD Student

Vermont EPSCoR is recruiting several PhD level graduate students to join our cutting-edge NSF funded research on Basin Resilience to Extreme Events (BREE). We are initiating a five-year award of large-scale interdisciplinary studies which will determine how the Lake Champlain Basin’s landscape, watershed and lake conditions respond to extreme weather events and will test policy scenarios for enhancing resilience using our comprehensive Integrated Assessment Model (IAM). As a member of the BREE team, you will have excellent mentoring and participate in unique learning and professional development experiences including learning to communicate your science through our program with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.

  • MPhil/PhD Scholarship: Understanding contagion spreading processes of cyber security threats through social networks

Description: The spreading on ideas, memes, norms, products, and diseases are few examples of phenomena that can be studied and modelled as contagion processes on networks. Surprisingly, the dynamics of contagion in terms of semantic social engineering threats, such as phishing, scams, drive-by-malware etc. have received so far little attention. Indeed, although their spreading is conducted primarily in online social networks, studies in cyber security have been focused mainly on defining the characteristics (features) of threats and users that are more likely to result in successful attacks. In other words, the complexity emerging from the unsupervised interactions and actions of large number of users as well as threats strategies have been largely neglected. The project will tackle this limitation head-on. By mixing approaches from cyber security, network and data science the project aims at characterising the mechanisms and the phenomenology behind the spreading of cyber threats on social networks. The PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr. Loukas (Faculty of Architecture Computing and Humanities) and Prof. Yamir Moreno (University of Zaragoza, Spain).

  • PhD Position in Evolutionary Game Theory

The project of the thesis is on evolutionary game theory. The focus is on spatio-temporal patterns in generalized Lotka-Volterra models, with applications to cellular, neuronal or ecological networks. Such patterns range from regular temporal sequences of excitations in neuronal networks to self-organized spatial segregation and the formation of alliances between species in ecological systems, including extinction events of parts of the population. The position is funded by the German Research foundation for three years(DFG).
